WILLINGTON'S FA CUP VICTORY

In 1906 the town set up its own football club – Willington AFC. In 1939 they reached the final of the Amateur Cup, losing 3–0 to Bishop Auckland at Roker Park, Sunderland.

Skip Forward to 29th April 1950. Willington is like a ghost town.  The streets are empty.  Everyone has gone to London to watch the FA Amateur Cup Final at Wembley – a local derby, Willington AFC vs Bishop Auckland. In front of a crowd of 88,000, Willington beat their old rivals 4-0 to win the cup!
