THE TIME DETECTIVES
Travelling through Willington’s history with local schools
In the spring of 2023, artists Julie Ballands, Jo Ebberly, Helena Fox and Sam Slatcher created the Time Detectives and worked with children from Willington, St. Stephen’s, Our Lady & St Thomas, Hunwick and Sunnybrow primary schools, taking them on a journey of discovery through Willington’s history using their dodgy time machine.
They explored Willington’s Bronze Age and Roman history, took part in a reinactment of the Northern Rebellion at Brancepeth Castle, discovered the impact of coal and railways on the town and found out about what life was like in the area during the two world wars.
It was interesting because we learnt about jobs in the victorian times
It made me admire my village more than I did before. More history than I thought.
It made feel like a real archaeologist.
I liked how energetic it was especially when we could make some moves to activate the time machine.
It made me feel I know more about where I live.
I liked getting to learn about the different people's perspectives in World War I
We decided down in the dungeon if we freed Mary Queen of Scots or not.
It made me want to know more about the past of different places.
I loved holding the artifacts, looking for the artifacts in the sand and making the cups with the clay.
