This expansive recreational site was created by the reclamation of colliery pit heaps in 1998. It gave the cricket club a new lease of life and the girls’ football club was founded in 2012.
The cricket club had existed since 1894 but disbanded around 1970 before resurfacing a few years later. The current facilities were created with the help of a European fund for rural development grant and in 2017 Hunwick CC was voted Sports Club of the Year in the Active Durham Sport and Physical Activity awards.
An early account of a cricket match against a team from Coundon said it was played at Hunwick Station. Another site mentioned was “Daniel Riggs”, somewhere near Hunwick Hall Farm. From the early 1900s to 1962 they played at Brecon Hill to the right of Bracken Hill Road. Two basic wooden buildings served as a changing room and tea hut. The field was rented from the Bitchburn Fire and Clay Company by local butcher Simpson Heslop, whose family were heavily involved with the cricket club. There was also a grass tennis court on the field.
A move to the recreational field behind the Workingmen’s Club in the 1960s proved unsuccessful, possibly because of the steep slope. The club folded for a few years before a committee was formed to resurrect it and gained permission from the county council to use the school field. The club went from strength to strength and has continued to thrive since moving to the current site in 1998.The team was promoted to the Durham County League in 2018 after winning the North East Durham League. Reorganisation of the leagues in 2020 took them into division two of the Durham and North East League, alongside more illustrious clubs such as Durham City.
