In 1833 it was reported that ten boys and six girls were in attendance. The church school was built in 1848 and extended in 1860 to include one large room and three smaller classrooms, but the lack of space meant that an upstairs Sunday School room at the Wesleyan Chapel was also used. The school, now a private house, became the church hall after the need for something larger prompted the building of what was initially a junior and senior school across the road. The desks had double tip-up seats on an iron frame, a shelf for books, a groove for pens and an ink well. There were two slits at the back for slates, on which all writing had been done at the church school. The secondary modern school survived until the advent of comprehensive education brought its closure in 1976, the pupils being transferred to Parkside School at Willington. The primary school was burnt down in 1980 and rebuilt along the lines now seen. There was also an infant school half a mile away at West End, built in 1879.
