HIDDEN HERITAGE AND WELLBEING
Welcome to our site celebrating the “hidden heritage” of Willington – a former coal-mining town in County Durham.
With funding from National Lottery Heritage Fund, arts organisation Northern Heartlands worked with local schools and the local community during 2022-23 to uncover new stories and show the world that there’s more to Willington than you might think!
Explore our pages to learn how we found out
- the significance of Willington in Roman times
- How nearby Brancepeth Castle was critical in the changing fortunes of the north during Tudor times
- What happened to Willington during the two World Wars
- Where Mary Queen of Scots once rested on her journey northwards
- and how -even though it was once dwarfed by the twin peaks of Dante Heap, Willington is now so much more than just a “former mining town”
Hidden Heritage and Wellbeing
This site is still under construction. Visit us again to find out how our schools and the whole community got involved with the project.
And this Autumn the site will include a series of digital heritage trails around the village of Hunwick, created by Hunwick resident John Pallister with support from Hunwick Community Social and Environment Group and local ramblers.
